Wes Castro: Sponsored by MtnBikeRiders.com
I’d like to introduce to you a guy that is a pretty good DH racer, but also has a very inspiring life story that caught our attention.
Wes at the Nationals, 2nd place.
Here’s a little bit of info about Wes.
I started racing when I was about 10 years old racing BMX till I was 15 and football took over. I have also raced Off Road trucks and SCCA Solo II so I have always been a competitive person. As for Mountain Bikes I started this February in Fontana where I placed 9th.
I have gone on to race one more winter series race which I improved and finished 6th. In the Rock Shock Series I have taken a 2nd and 4th and I am fully committed for the rest of the series and also for the Winter Series next year.
Last year in May of 2008 I weighed 280lbs and in one year I have lost 140lbs and now weigh 140lbs I reached my goal.
So I asked Wes about his weight loss and how he stayed motivated. He told me that he set out to achieve a goal, and with the help of his family, especially his kids, he was able eat right and ride his bike towards his weight loss.
Man, I struggle with needing to lose 20lbs, but Wes lost a grip of weight…that’s like loosing a person…literally.
Wes will be joining the DH crew racing along side Moe and Joe. He’s also started training on 4X racing, so we hope to see him going against some tough competition out in Fontana.
Congrats to Wes on his life changing weight loss and for becoming part of the team.
great job! now he should explain how exactly he lost 140 lbs . I wouldn’t mind hearing that
Well lets just start with Thanks for the awesome welcome. The loosing wieght thing was started because I didnt want to take Meds. I started to take meds for High Blood Pressure, Cholesterol and Diabetes Type 2. This is how I started. I stopped drinking sodas, alcohol and anything that had carbs and sugar so basicly just drank water. My second Step was to cut out all fried and fast foods, just had home cooked meals. Example One egg, Fruit and Water for breakfast. Whole grain sandwich with fat free lean meat and a vegetable raw or fruit and dinner was gilled chicken, whole grain pasta and vegetables and 2 sugar free cookies. My intake was about 1200-1500 Calories. I did this for 2 months and lost 30lbs. Oh I rode my bike like crazy.
On my third month I kicked it up a gear and added some extra cardio and Protien Powder has a Extra meal now i was having 4 meals a day after my 4th month I lost 55lbs. The next month was hard I lost no wieght but I was getting smaller.
6th month I went crazy Egg whites, Protien Powder, and every kind of natural none saturated fat foods and started eating 6 times a day. Example 6am Oatmeal with soy milk and a scoop of protien mixed in. 9am Lean Turkey in whole wheat wrap. Lunch Half a Sandwich Ezykeil Bread and raw vegetable and Protien Powder. 2pm The other half of the sandwich and fruit. 4pm Protien powder and Vegetable. Dinner 6pm no later Grilled chicken Forman Grill Whole grain Pasta or rice and vegetable. About 1500-1800 Calories, 120-140 grams protien and maybe 30 grams of carbs. Oh I rode my bike like crazy. In 8 months I lost about 100lbs. The last 4 months before my year I kept everything the same except I added light resistance traing and Oh I rode my bike like crazy.
There is a little more detail but when I meet the rest of the team I’ll let you in on a phew more secrets.
Sorry for the long post
Goes to show you that if you are determined, you WILL reach your goal! Good job Wes!!!
SO AWESOME THANKS FOR SHARING!!!
Incredible…the healing and rejuvenating power of the bicycle!!! Way to go, Wes!
Do you have to take any of your medications anymore?
No I do not take any meds My Cholesterol normal and my blood pressure went from 147 over 98 to 115 over 64 or close to that. The best thing is that they cant find by Type 2 Diabetes anymore.
Pure awesomeness…doctors need to start prescribing a sensible diet and lots of bike riding rather than an army of pills — and you’re proof of that. Good on you!
