Weekend Ride Report: Aliso Woods – Aliso Viejo, CA
This was another fun filled weekend on our fat tires. For RL and I, we’ve had a great weekend riding. On Saturday, we shuttled the Troy Lee trail in Corona, for some downhill fun. A video of our ride will be posted shortly.
Sunday morning started off in a bad note for me. I was meeting my bro-in-law Cons so he can follow me to the trail. Along the way to our meeting point, I wasn’t paying attention and made an illegal U-Turn – result… a ticket. 🙁
This morning we headed to Aliso Woods, one of our favorite trails. We were setting for a chillaxin’ ride. It’s been a while since we’ve had one of these “relax vibe” sessions. Meeting me at the trail were RL, Priscilla, my son Jared, Cons and our friend Gabriel (Gabe).
Today’s ride was extra special for me as it’s been 10yrs since my son has been on the trail with me. Last time we rode together he was at a young age of ten. We started our ride up Cholla. Once up top we headed to Rock-It for a fun descent. At the bottom we rode on Coyote Trail towards Dripping Cave. On the way back we saw some wildlife. There was a family of deer and about twenty feet away a coyote. We watched for a bit waiting for something happen, but turned out to be nothing.
It was a great ride. No pressure, just riding from point A to point B. We had several cameras today. RL had a camera mounted on his frame and I wore a chest mounted camera. Cons also brought a camera and mounted on his handlebars, however as we started our descent on Rock-It, the mount broke. Below are two videos from RL and I, enjoy…
Great times Joe. Hopefully Jared will start coming out on our rides…dude, can you imagine if he gets into 4x…I’m sure his BMX skills will transfer over.
By the way, your Bro-inlaw is super cool and the Romanian Thunder (Gabe)is one funny guy! “Hey where’s the other guy, I can’t stand waiting for people…” haha
Thanks for the great time guys, again you waited for me and I had a lot to learn! Rockit is a really cool trail, I liked it a lot, I’ll definately go there soon again to get in better shape (damn Cholla! 🙂 )!
Aren’t these slow guys anoying, seriously? 🙂
Romanian Thunder (Gabe),
First of all, I sure do hope you’re Romanian, I keep calling you Thunder….anyhow, one thing you may want to consider with your bike is to lighten it up a bit.
First step, remove the kick stand. That’s got to be at least a pound! Besides, it could eventually become a safety issue when you’re coming down Rockit, if that thing springs open when you hit a big bump…KABOOM! Your bike will explode into a million pieces…
Good times indeed!
RL – I was talking to Jared about it, he’s willing to try it. I think I can modify that 5.5 for 4x. Change the fork settings to 4″, shorten the stem, etc…
Gabe – good job out there! You didnt look as tired as when we went to El Moro. If you can get out a little early on Thursdays, meet us at Fullerton… you Romanian Thunder 🙂
Thanks, it makes sense, I’ll remove the kick stand.
I need to change my cassette first to go to Fullerton, I think RL said I should get a 34. I’d be happy to try, but I don’t want to slow you down, we’ll talk about it.
Gabe,
In reality you don’t need to swap out your cassette. If you stick with the current set up, you’ll end up a better rider. If you go to a 34t rear cassette, you’ll end up going slower up the hill, but it does make it a bit easier.
Damn, you guys and gal are getting pretty fast, I’m gonna have to take a break from Kim “more miles” and Tony “break neck DH” to get some more rides with you guys.
David,
That ride was one of the better ones we’ve have in a while. We just had fun, no rush and took our time to really enjoy the trail.
Yea, it’s rides like these that made me fall in love with mtn biking – just had a great time. 🙂 I really enjoyed Con’s vid too. Nice to see you and your son out there Joe – that must feel great. 🙂
Good times indeed.
