Winter mountain biking in Southern California… maybe RL is wearing too much.
So I decided I’d write to all those living in the cold weather parts of the states… or world. This is an open invitation to you. Join us in Southern California to realize an amazing winter riding experience: riding in winter in shorts. Yes, shorts.
You are invited to join the MtnBikeRiders.com crew in what we here call “winter mountain bikingâ€. Winter mountain biking, in Southern California, means we start off with a long sleeve jersey or arm warmers and part way through the ride we switch to short sleeve jerseys. There is no need to wear lobster gloves or booties that go over your shoes to keep your tootsies warm. And there is definitely no need to wear long pants.
Lobster gloves? Not for mountain biking during the Southern California winters.

Show CommentsAll I can say is, I’m jealous. I rode my bike to work today over slick, icy roads. Although, one good thing about cold weather riding is that if you aren’t good (like me) when you fall you have padding!
You know what jer, my only complaint about SoCal would be the weather. It’s always sunny here. We really don’t get to experience the seasons…
seasons, shmeasons. Seasons are overrated. The only season I need is Riding season. 😉
I live in New England and ride all year long, winter is a great time to ride.
I think I’ll stick to SW Florida…thanks anyway!
Sometimes for road rides I’ll have to wear a longsleeve jersey and long tights (or at least kneewarmers) and a hat under my helmet, but that’s pretty rare. No studded tires or handwarmers for us!!!
I wouldn’t mind “TRYING” biking in the snow. I’ve done it a few times but only for a short period of time.
Riding in the snow is a blast…we did it a lot in high school, mostly on BMX bikes but with the occasional MTB. I even rode my Bianchi race bike in the snow once — not a good idea. Those skinny tires punched right through the crust and had ZERO traction on the underlying surface. I wound up on my ass.
Yeah, rub it in guys! But seriously.. I would love to try out that Ktraks set up for the snow! Anyone have it or ever try it?

It’s actually not that bad of a price, but we hardly get enough snow to make it worth it.
I read a review of the Ktrak the other day…NOT favorable. Really cool concept, though!
