If you ever encounter horse people…
Make sure you give them respect and stop your bike so they can pass through. If not, you might spook the horse and get a good swift kick to the face.

Show CommentsAlways give horses the right of way until they signal you to pass. There was a guy in Peter’s Canyon you tried to pass a couple of horses (on the left) w/out giving them warning… one of them kick, hit the guy – SHATTERED his knee.

Yeah. I used to just slow down and pass gently but after reading more about it I’ve decided to call out and ask what the horse people would like for me to do.
I’m selfish. I’d rather live to ride another day then get kicked and be out for months.
I’ve been run off the W&OD Trail in the D.C. metro area by a horse and rider — I had no idea that there was an “etiquette” to passing a horse, so I just blazed by. The horse reared up and started flailing those hooves, so I veered off the trail and into a gully, taco-ing both of my racing wheels when I crashed at the bottom.
Man, it was a long walk home carrying that bike (4 miles or so).
Horse trainers / riders can take an effort in training the horse to get used to trails with bikes. A good friend of mine at work has done this and the horses just ignore the bikes. My brother in law was bumped into lots of brush with a horses bee-hind and he had no clue about the “Yield and MOVE!”. Sucks about your tacos Ghost. 🙁

My husband rides a mountain bike and I ride a horse – in SOME places, we ride together, on the same trails. It depends on the horse, obviously; my horse (an Arabian mind you!) doesn’t care one bit about him on his bike, probably because she sees him buzzing around our property sometimes. There have been places where he has passed me, say on a nice straight stretch and she gets MAD and wants to catch up to him. I have the advantage in the deep mud, though. NOT EVERYONE is like us – just use caution and common sense, since not all horses are used to bikes. Keep the trails open for ALL of us.
PS – oh yeah, that pic is CREEPY! My horse is WAY better looking!
