How To Tune a Sram X7 Rear Derailleur

How To's/Tech Tips Main

The Woodstock 707 is equipped with the Sram X7 rear dérailleur and shifters. Tuning the dérailleur is a bit different from Shimano dérailleurs. One might notice that the X7’s don’t have adjusting barrels on the dérailleur it self. The adjusting barrel is actually located on the shifter pod.

First step is to shift it so the chain is on the second gear up.

Now what you want to do is have the chain jump to the next gear up. You’ll need to turn the adjuster barrel on the shifter pod, making sure you’re counting each turn, while pedaling the cranks, until the gear changes.

Once it has jumped gears, shift down to the smallest gear on the cassette. then turn your adjusting barrel half count of how many turns it took to have it go on the third gear. For example, if it took you 10 turns to get it to go on the next gear up, then you’ll have to turn the barrel 5 times, clockwise.

Now test out your shifting and you’ll see that it’s working just fine. You may have to make half turn adjustments in order to get it just right. But for the most part, you’ve done the bulk of the work.
