It happens once in a while…

It’s been some time since I’ve wanted a bike REALLY bad. Being part of the world of Media for Mountain Biking we’re exposed to so many different and wonderful bikes with all the bells and whistles. Heck some of them costs more than the value of my car…yah..sad isn’t it. But as the title says, it happens once in a while. I’ve been Single Speeding for about a year now and I simply love it.

I’ve often said to the guys around me that 29ers are cool, but if they were simply lighter I’d ride them more. Then I realized that there these bikes called Cyclocross…hmm novel idea. I thought the idea of Cross bikes are pretty awesome because it mixes the speed and stuff of road biking, but on dirt! So I for the longest time I’ve been wanting a single speed cyclocross bike…and guess what? BikesDirect has one called the Fantom Cross Uno for $399.99!

So this bike that you see before you is the bike that caught my attention…yes more so than the bikes with super duper suspension or carbon parts…

That is one SEXY bike! I’m more of a ‘no frills’ type of guy… Simple and sexy.

AND, it has mounts for fenders and/or racks.

Cross bikes rock! I’ve been riding a Surly Cross-Check for about a year as my all-around bike. Nothing pisses the roadies off more than to pass them on a hill, with a cross-bike, wearing baggy shorts, and a skate helmet. For a real thrill, check out the Salsa Fargo… just don’t look at the price…

I just bought an Uno Cross frame&fork from bike island.com. It only cost $230. It is mislabeled as 6066 aluminum, but actually 4130 steel (same as crosscheck). Been looking for a fixed gear frame for a while, and this one seems to put all the other taiwan frames to shame for less money. 120 track spacing, 42mm tire clearance. I imagine these frames are gonna go quick. I love having an all-around bike for going off road, touring, and everyday riding.
I’m surprised that there aren’t more of these types of frames out there.
