New Year’s Day I found myself on a tough ride that started with a 6 mile climb. The wind was blowing hard all morning so my buddy and I were tuckered out when we got back to the trailhead. Luckily, I brought along a nice brew to end the year and start the new one off right. Â
Tire levers pullin their weight
Widmer Brothers was founded in 1984. Their hefeweizen is extremely well known in these parts and can be found in almost any store. I’m not partial to their hef so I hesitated to pick this one up, but was glad I did. This seasonal stout was made as a collaboration between the Widmer Brothers and the Oregon Brew Crew. The latter is one of the oldest home brewing clubs in the nation. My trusty tire lever allowed me access to this interesting seasonal.
Low profile beverage holder
This stout is brewed with milk sugar and lends the drink a creaminess that I’ve not seen in any other beer. It pours like a coffee creamer and tastes initially of roasted chocolates and malts. There is a slight sweetness and also slight bitterness but they balance out nicely. The over-riding trait of this brew is the creamy, hearty flavor from the milk sugar. It’s mild and soothing and gives the beer a silky smooth body. I didn’t notice this brew had milk in it until after I bought it(I’m vegan) but I sure as hell wasn’t going to throw it away, so I figured I’d allow myself a little hypocrisy for the new year. Â
If your lifestyle allows and you’re looking for a holiday stout, try this one out.  I thought it was very unique and actually quite delicious although I’ll have to put a chest hair warning on this one. Hey, you play with stouts and hair appears…it’s that simple.
I entirely relish brewing beer at home! It has been such a fun hobby. My family has been behind me, but most especially once its time to try my latest recipe.
