Why?

A few weeks ago we were at the Fullerton Loop. I pull up to a guy that didn’t have a helmet. But he had a nice bike. As I roll by, I say to him in a nice friendly tone, “You’re going to need a helmet! 🙂 “

Then he says…in a meanish way…“WHY!?!”

I responded by saying…“So you don’t kill yourself when you land on your head!!!”

Priscilla and I rode away just shaking our heads…Now I don’t know what crawled up his butt and died, but I’m assuming he must have been told by a few people on the trails about getting a helmet and finally snapped and I said something….oh well, what can you do, right?

He’ll learn on his own…the hard way!

Two words…natural selection. Sometimes the herd needs thinned.

we call them organ doners. guess the ER calls motorcycle riders without em that too.

Well, I guess since the rider didn’t have the brains to wear a helmet, there wasn’t much to protect anyways.

I’m still surprised to see SO many trials riders out there still not wearing helmets. Thats just crazy, especially with some of the stuff they are trying to pull off!

On the one web site http://www.observedtrials.net if anyone uploads trials bike videos, everyone on the site has been trying to make negative comments regarding the fact that they don’t have a helmet on. It actually works for the most part. I haven’t seen a single video with someone with no helmet in quite some time.

Some people will never learn even after getting injured, but what are ya gonna do?

You miss the obvious. There are human issues other than risk going on in life. He got pissed because you made a judgement about him AND told him what he “needed.” Maybe he is just that good. Maybe his secret pleasure is riding without a helmet. It is called free will. Respectfully I must say, the cycling community has no right to dictate personal experience. I trust your intentions were good, but to fault him for his response is as preachy as the initial “You are going to need..” statement. Think it over.

    Juancho,

Thanks for the input, but those few seconds I had to interact with the rider didn’t give me time to ask him about his mom, his childhood, his demons and such. I think you may have not seen the obvious in that I CARED enough to say something. I don’t want to hear about people injuring themselves because they weren’t wearing a helmet.

I didn’t judge the guy. You’re right, perhaps he likes the way the air feels on his bald head…perhaps its his thrill to do something crazy and not wear a helmet. What ever it is, I said it out of concern for his safety.

Juancho, I hear ya on this one. My wife feels the need to shout “get a helmet!” to riders going by. I ask her why she feels the need to do that. If they want to break their skull on a rock…they’re big boys/girls and they can decide that for themselves.

“My wife feels the need to shout “get a helmet!â€?”
