I have finally been able to balance Family time and riding time, it was simple I just joined them. Tomorrow will be hopefully the 4th successful climb up Mustard in 8 days with my lil’ Animal on her trail a bike, it has been hard to pull but well worth it, NO Pain-No Gain.
When we crest the top of the hill and people cheer us on my little girl really likes it when people give her props, hoots, and her favorite “Go Girl”.
With the lil’ Animal following me everywhere now it is getting hard to break away on the SS. So my compromise is take the geared bike with monster brakes and cushy suspension and add almost 100 pounds to feel the burn, some call me crazy but we are having a great time together.

Very cool. I pull my daughter around on a Trail-a-bike during road and paved trail rides and was thinking about moving off road too. Did you make any modifications to the trailer?
CrankyMule, the first modification to the trail a bike was replacing the rigid model with the Shocker suspension model (super rare) by Adams Trail a Bike. See link in first paragraph.
A cheaper route would be to lower the trail a bike tire psi way down, and carry an extra tube. I have lowered the psi on the suspension model and it helps a great deal.
Next was lil’ Animal’s mods, she wanted her own water bottle cage (mounted on front side of handle bar), a bell and a horn.
One very important mod was using a bike that can stop both you and your child, V-brakes get hot and slippery with the extra weight of the trailer and should not be used offroad. I have been using 203mm hydraulic disc brakes with lots of stopping power, and above all start slow and be smart on the trails.
Thanks. We have the bell and water bottle plus a handlebar bag that can carry the spare tube, cliff bars and a small stuffed bear. The promise of a post ride stop at out local coffee shop always adds incentive too.
